Subject:Study for LGB Latina/o Individuals
Time:11:18 am

Hello! My name is Brandon Velez, and I am a graduate student in the University of Florida’s Psychology Department.  I am conducting a study that I hope will contribute to understanding the experiences and well-being of Latina/o lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals. Participation will involve completing a survey online and will take approximately 30 minutes. Because your participation is very important to this goal, I hope that you will set aside time to complete this study.

In order to participate you must:

·         be 18 years of age or older

·         reside in the United States

·         identify as Latina/o or Hispanic

·         identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or some other sexual minority status (e.g., queer, questioning)

If you would like to participate and you identify as a woman, please follow this link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LBwomen

If you would like to participate and you identify as a man, please follow this link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GBmen

Thank you VERY much in advance for your time and effort!  Please feel free to pass on this link to other people who might be eligible.

If you have any question about this study, please feel free to contact me at velezbl@gmail.com. This research has been approved by the University of Florida’s Institutional Review Board (UFIRB#2010-U-0579).

Sincerely,

Brandon Velez, B.S.

Subject:free LGBT-themed films and curriculum resources
Time:03:49 pm
Thought folks in this group might be interested in a new project from GSA Network and Frameline called Youth In Motion.  We provide *free* LGBT-themed DVDs to middle and high schools throughout California (unfortunately, our grant limits us to California at the moment), along with fierce Curriculum Guides and fabulous Action Guides.  We believe that having an LGBT-inclusive curriculum is a key component of making schools safe and welcoming to folks of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions.

I posted about it on our LJ here or you can register directly on our website!

If you're outside of California, you can still order the films for your GSA or school -- they're only $25 each (which is hella cheap compared to most movies).  Visit our website for more info: http://youthinmotion.frameline.org.

Here's the covers from our first 4 DVDs -- you can see they cover a broad range of topics:

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFE campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student

Hello everyone! I have a dilemma. My college's GSA is dying. We no longer get the audiences we used to, and to be frank, it sucks. We've come down to five people who actually show, counting the council.

Do you have any ideas how to boost up our numbers? We're planning to post fliers around school and do a bake sale, but that's it for now.

Any ideas would be great. Here's our website (if you'd like to visit us): http://www.myspace.com/saddlebackgsa

We welcome everybody!

Subject:Civil Rights Violation
Time:01:27 pm

I don't know if you've all heard this already, but I felt the need to post it.

"On June 21, 2005 a good friend’s civil rights were violated. First by the staff and security at Six Flags Marine World, and second by the Vallejo City Police Department. As a season pass holder he was considered "rowdy" while waiting in line for an attraction. His appearence made some of the patrons uncomfortable. He was taken into an office, lectured, and told he was to leave the park. When he asked to go, they told him the police had already been called. When the police arrived he asked his charges, and they told him "we will just have to make something up." They frisked him, twice, and then lead him away in handcuffs, forced him against the car, and as his leg brushed up against the officer, the charge of battery was added to the list. He was not drunk, having only had one 12oz can of Budweiser before he walked the two miles to the theme park from his home in Vallejo. He had no intent to harm or hurt anyone, and he was taken in, arrestted, and forced to endure slander and threats from officers, who at one point made fun of him for "trying to grab an officer's dick," and calling him a "wuss" and a "homo." They asked him his sexuality, which they proceeded to enter into a computer in order to "place" him in the jail. He stayed four days courtesy of the Vallejo police department for being loud at a theme park. He was pushed around, hit, tossed to the floor, and it was repeatedly made evident that his sexuality and stature and appearence were the cause of harassment. Attempts to obtain the police report have gotten us nowhere, they denied access to it unless his attorney (*he doesn't have one) asks for it. Any help would be appriciated. We understand that people do not like to jump on board without information, and we are trying to get as much as possible. Josue is depressed, not eating, and not in good mental condition due to this experience, and we are just trying to keep him from going to jail where he will be subjected to abuse and taunts by these same officers, who we feel have violated his civil rights as a citizen, gay, straight, black, blue, or whatever. Thank you."

Go to the link, add them as a friend and please leave them a comment supporting them.
